 Dumpster Rental Questions

When you rent a dumpster, you’re not just choosing a container—you’re choosing a company you can trust and rely on. You’re choosing a partner who will be there for the entire job.

At Tri County Trash, we take real pride in delivering reliable service, honest pricing, and a truly hassle-free rental experience from the first phone call to the final pickup. As a locally owned and operated business, we know the needs of homeowners, contractors, and businesses right here in our community. We’ve worked on the same kinds of projects you face every day, and that local understanding helps us provide the practical support and flexibility that make the whole process smoother.

Our goal is simple: to be the dependable partner you can count on so you can focus on getting your project done without extra stress.

A dumpster rental is simply a sturdy metal container that we deliver right to your home, driveway, or jobsite so you have a convenient place to toss all the debris that comes with a project. Whether you’re gutting a kitchen, cleaning out a garage, remodeling a bathroom, or clearing construction waste, the dumpster sits right where you need it and stays there for as long as the job requires.

We handle the heavy lifting: our team drops the dumpster off on the day that works best for you, and once you’ve finished filling it, we come back and haul everything away. No more making repeated trips to the landfill or worrying about how to dispose of bulky materials. It’s an easy, stress-free way to keep your property tidy and your project moving forward.

No more making repeated trips to the landfill or worrying about how to dispose of bulky materials. It’s an easy, stress-free way to keep your property tidy and your project moving forward.

TriCounty Trash is a local roll-off dumpster rental company dedicated to making debris removal simple and stress-free for homeowners and contractors across the area.

A roll-off dumpster is essentially a large, open-top metal container built for easy loading and transport. It’s a rectangular box with no lid on top, a swinging door on one end for convenient access, and heavy-duty wheels on the opposite end. When we deliver your rental, our truck carefully lowers the dumpster and uses those wheels to roll it smoothly into the exact spot you need—whether that’s a driveway, jobsite, or side yard.

In short, a roll-off dumpster is just an open-top container designed to “roll” into place, giving you a sturdy, accessible place to toss everything from remodel debris to yard waste without the hassle of lids or complicated setups. Once it’s positioned, you’re ready to start filling it at your own pace.

Renting a dumpster with TriCounty Trash really is a total breeze from start to finish. Simply place your order online or give us a quick call—whichever is more convenient for you—and we’ll take care of the rest. From the moment you reach out until the dumpster is picked up, we stay in close communication with you because your satisfaction is the most important part of our service.

We’ll deliver the dumpster right on the day and time that works best for your schedule and carefully place it exactly where you need it, whether that’s in the driveway, beside the garage, or right at the jobsite. Once you’ve finished your cleanup or project, just request a pickup online and our driver will come haul it away as soon as possible.

Need a little extra time? No problem at all. Just give us a call. We understand that projects sometimes run longer than expected and life happens, so we’re always happy to extend your rental at no extra charge. Our goal is to make the whole process as easy and flexible as possible so you can focus on getting the job done.

You want it—we deliver! At TriCounty Trash, there’s truly no limit to the number of dumpsters you can rent at one time. Whether you need one bin or a whole fleet, we’ll provide as many as your project requires.

We can drop everything off the same day if you’re ready to go, or stagger the deliveries over several days so the dumpsters arrive exactly when you need them. We also deliver to multiple jobsites, so if you’re managing more than one location, we’ve got you covered. Just let us know what your project needs, and we’ll make the logistics simple and flexible.

In most cases, you do not need a permit to place a dumpster on your own private property, such as a driveway, as long as the placement follows local regulations and any HOA or neighborhood requirements.

Placing a dumpster on a public street, road, or other public right-of-way may require a permit or approval from the city, county, or other local authority. Requirements can vary depending on where you live and where the dumpster will be placed.

For homeowners in Wilmington, New Hanover County, Pender County, and Brunswick County, we recommend checking with the appropriate local authority before placing a dumpster on a public street. If you live in an HOA or gated community, you should also check whether your community has additional rules.

The easiest option is usually your driveway or another private, accessible area on your property. If you're unsure whether your planned location is suitable, give Tri County Trash a call. We're happy to help you choose a safe and convenient location for delivery and pickup.

Yes! Homeowners in HOAs and gated communities throughout Wilmington, New Hanover County, Pender County, and Brunswick County can typically have a dumpster delivered to their property. There may just be a few additional requirements to check before scheduling your dumpster rental.

Some homeowners associations (HOAs) and property management companies have rules about dumpster placement, delivery access, rental duration, or how long a dumpster can remain in the neighborhood. Gated communities may also require advance notice, a gate code, or other instructions so our driver can access your property.

Before your dumpster rental in Wilmington or the surrounding area, we recommend checking with your HOA or property manager to make sure you know about any community requirements. If approval is needed, it’s best to take care of that before your scheduled delivery.

Not sure where the dumpster can go? No problem! Give Tri County Trash a call. We can help you determine a practical placement location with safe, convenient access for delivery and pickup while taking your neighborhood’s requirements into consideration.

Whether you're cleaning out a garage, tackling a home renovation, preparing for a move, or handling a larger estate cleanout, we make dumpster rental as easy as possible.

 The Rental Process

1. Book Your Dumpster

Reserve your dumpster online or give us a call. We’ll help you choose the right size and schedule a convenient delivery and pickup date.

2. We Deliver

Our professional drivers will deliver your dumpster and place it where you need it, such as your driveway, curbside, or another suitable location.

3. You Load It

Load the dumpster at your own pace throughout your rental period. Just keep everything below the top rim and make sure you’re only loading approved materials.

***** If you’re unsure whether something is allowed, give us a call—we’re happy to help. *****

4. We Haul It Away

On your scheduled pickup date, we’ll pick up the dumpster and take your debris to an approved disposal or recycling facility. Finished with your project early? Let us know by calling or texting, and we’ll do our best to arrange an earlier pickup.

1. How far in advance should I book my dumpster?

We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance whenever possible. This gives us the best chance of getting you the dumpster size and delivery time you need, especially during busy times of the year. Need one sooner? Give us a call! Same-day and next-day delivery may be available depending on our schedule.

2. Do I need to be home when my dumpster is delivered or picked up?

Nope! You don’t need to be home for delivery or pickup. As long as we know where you’d like the dumpster placed, we can take care of the rest. When booking, just provide clear placement instructions and make sure the area is easy to access and free of cars, equipment, branches, or other obstacles.

3. How long can I keep the dumpster?

Your rental period depends on your project and the amount of time you’ve booked the dumpster for. We understand that projects don’t always go exactly as planned, so if you need a little more time, just let us know before your rental period ends. We may be able to extend your rental if the dumpster is available. The more notice you can give us, the easier it is for us to work with your schedule.

4. What if I’m not sure how long I’ll need the dumpster?

That’s perfectly okay! If you’re not sure how long your project will take, give us a call and tell us a little about what you’re working on. We’ll help you choose a rental period length that makes sense for your project. And if your plans change along the way, just let us know—we’ll do our best to adjust the schedule when we can.

1. What if I fill the dumpster before my project is finished?

No worries—it happens! If your dumpster is full and you still have more to clean up, we have a couple of options:

Schedule an exchange: We’ll pick up the full dumpster and bring you an empty one so you can keep going.

Add another dumpster: If you have the space, we can arrange for an additional dumpster to be delivered.

Both options depend on availability and scheduling, so give us a call or text as soon as you think you may need more room. We’ll be happy to help you figure out the best option for your project.

2. What should I do when I’m finished loading the dumpster?

Once you’re finished, just give us a call or send us a text to let us know you’re ready for pickup. You don’t need to be home when we arrive, but there are a few quick things to check first:

  • Make sure everything is level with or below the top edge of the dumpster.

  • Remove any prohibited items that may have accidentally been placed inside.

  • Make sure the pickup area is clear of vehicles, gates, branches, or other obstacles.

That’s it! We’ll take care of the rest. Our driver will secure the load, cover it with a tarp, and haul everything away.

3. Can I rent multiple dumpsters for a larger or ongoing project?

Absolutely! Whether you’re tackling a large cleanup, managing a construction project, or working through several phases of a job, we can help coordinate multiple dumpsters or scheduled exchanges to keep your project moving. Just let us know what you’re working on, and we’ll help find a setup that works for you.

If you run into any problems while renting a dumpster from us, the best thing to do is give us a call or text us right away.

We’re here to help and will work with you to sort things out quickly—whether it’s a delivery question, a placement issue, needing extra time, or anything else that comes up. Just reach out and let us know what’s going on. We’ll stay in communication the whole way and make sure the situation is handled to your satisfaction.

Our goal is to keep the process as smooth and stress-free as possible, so never hesitate to contact us. We’re always happy to help.

Choosing The Right Dumpster Size

We offer several dumpster sizes to make it easier to find the right fit for your project. Our dumpsters are available for both residential and commercial jobs, whether you’re cleaning out a garage, remodeling a home, or tackling a larger construction project.

Our standard sizes include:

  • 12-yard dumpster: Approximately 14' L × 8' W × 4' H

  • 15-yard dumpster: Approximately 16' L × 8' W × 4.5' H

  • 20-yard dumpster: Approximately 16' L × 8' W × 6' H

  • 30-yard dumpster: Approximately 22' L × 8' W × 6' H

Choosing a dumpster doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by thinking about what you’re throwing away, how much you have, and where the dumpster will go.

Consider the size of your project: Larger projects usually mean more debris, so you’ll likely need a larger dumpster. Smaller cleanouts and household projects may only require one of our smaller sizes.

Think about the type of debris: The material you’re disposing of matters, too. Heavy materials such as concrete, dirt, brick, and roofing can reach weight limits quickly. Lighter materials like household junk, furniture, and general debris allow you to make better use of the dumpster’s available space.

Take a look at your available space: Our dumpsters are designed to fit in many driveways and job sites, but access can vary. Tight driveways, gates, overhead obstacles, or limited space may affect which size will work best.

Not sure which size you need? Give us a call and tell us a little about your project. We’re happy to help you choose a size that makes sense for the job.

Garage cleanouts, yard clearouts, spring cleaning, and general decluttering usually involve lighter materials, so you may not need one of our largest dumpsters.

A 12-yard or 15-yard dumpster is often a good fit for these types of projects. They can handle plenty of household junk, boxes, furniture, clothing, toys, and general clutter while still being easy to place at your home.

Before choosing a size, take a quick look at everything you plan to throw away. If you have several large pieces of furniture or a particularly big cleanout, moving up to the next size can give you the extra room you need and help prevent overfilling.

Estate cleanouts can involve a little bit of everything—from boxes, clothing, and household items to large amounts of furniture. For most estate cleanouts, a 20-yard or 30-yard dumpster is a good place to start.

A 20-yard dumpster is often a great choice for a smaller estate cleanout or a home with a moderate amount of furniture. It provides plenty of room for boxes, household items, clothing, and several larger pieces of furniture.

A 30-yard dumpster may be the better choice when you’re cleaning out an entire home or dealing with a lot of furniture and bulky items. The additional space can make it easier to load large pieces without running out of room too quickly.

When choosing between the two, consider how much furniture you’ll be getting rid of, how many rooms are being cleaned out, and whether you’ll be disposing of other household items along with it. If you’re on the fence, it’s usually better to have a little extra room than to run out of space halfway through the cleanout.

Not sure which size will work best? Give us a call and tell us what you’re cleaning out. We’re happy to help you choose a dumpster that fits your estate cleanout.

For many home renovations and remodeling projects, a 15-yard or 20-yard dumpster is a great choice. They offer plenty of room for common renovation debris such as drywall, flooring, cabinets, countertops, doors, trim, and fixtures without taking up more space than necessary.

The best size will depend on the scope of your project and how much material you expect to remove. If you’re doing a small bathroom or room renovation, a 15-yard dumpster may be plenty. Larger renovations or projects involving multiple rooms may call for a 20-yard dumps

You can fill your dumpster with approved materials, but everything must stay level with or below the top edge of the dumpster. Nothing should stick out above the rim.

Keeping the load level helps keep it safe to transport and prevents debris from falling out while the dumpster is being moved. If a dumpster is overfilled, we may need to have some of the material removed before it can be picked up. This can lead to additional charges or delays, so it’s always best to leave a little room at the top.

Yes. Each dumpster has a weight limit based on its size, capacity, and the requirements of the disposal facility.

Most household and general cleanup materials are relatively light, but heavy materials such as concrete, dirt, brick, and roofing can add up quickly. If your load exceeds the applicable weight limit, additional charges may apply.

If you’re planning to dispose of heavy materials, please let us know before ordering your dumpster. We can help you determine the best option for your project and avoid surprises later.

Heavy materials require a little extra planning because they can reach a dumpster’s weight limit much faster than typical household debris.

If a load is too heavy, we’ll need to address it before it can be safely transported.

Depending on the situation:

  • The load may need to be reduced: Some of the material may need to be removed to bring the dumpster within the appropriate weight limit. This can result in additional work, fees, or a delay in pickup.

  • The disposal facility may reject or charge additional fees: If the load exceeds the facility’s limits, it may be subject to additional handling charges or, in some cases, may not be accepted.

  • You may need another dumpster: Depending on the amount and type of material, the remaining debris may need to be placed in another appropriately sized dumpster.

The easiest way to avoid these issues is to tell us about heavy materials before your dumpster is delivered. We can help you plan ahead and choose the best option for your project.

What Items Can Go Into a Dumpster

You can toss most everyday, non-hazardous waste into your TriCounty Trash dumpster. Whether you’re cleaning out the house, tackling a renovation, working on a landscaping project, or getting rid of general clutter, we’re here to make cleanup easier.

Some of the most common materials we can accept include:

  • Household Junk: Furniture, boxes, clothing, toys, household clutter, and other unwanted items.

  • Construction Debris: Drywall, wood and lumber, flooring, tile, cabinets, countertops, doors, trim, and similar renovation materials.

  • Yard Waste: Tree branches, leaves, grass clippings, bushes, shrubs, and other small landscaping debris.

  • Light Demolition Materials: Siding, roofing shingles, insulation, and other materials from smaller demolition or remodeling projects.

We can also handle certain heavier materials, such as concrete, brick, and dirt. Because these materials can add a lot of weight quickly, please let us know about them before your dumpster is delivered. This allows us to make sure the dumpster is appropriate for the material and that weight limits and disposal requirements are properly planned for.

Not sure if something can go in your dumpster? Just ask! We’re happy to help you figure it out before you start loading.

Most everyday household, construction, and yard waste can go right into your TriCounty Trash dumpster, but there are some materials we can’t accept. Certain items require special handling, recycling, or disposal at a facility specifically equipped to handle them.

To help keep your project safe and make sure everything is disposed of properly, please do not place the following items in your dumpster:

  • Hazardous Waste: Paints, paint thinners, solvents, pesticides, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. These items can be harmful to people, the environment, and disposal equipment and need to be handled separately.

  • Liquids: Oil, gasoline, fuel, wet paint, cleaning solutions, and other liquids are not allowed. Dumpsters are designed for solid materials, and liquids can leak, create safety concerns, or cause problems during transportation and disposal.

  • Flammable or Explosive Materials: Propane tanks, gasoline, fireworks, and other flammable or explosive materials require special handling and should never be placed in a dumpster.

  • Medical or Biohazardous Waste: Needles, syringes, sharps, prescription medications, and other medical or biohazardous materials cannot go in a dumpster. These items should be taken to an appropriate collection or disposal program.

  • Electronics & Certain Appliances: TVs, computer monitors, computers, and some larger appliances may contain components that require specialized recycling or disposal. This category can also include refrigerators, air conditioners, washers, dryers, and water heaters depending on local disposal requirements.

  • Tires & Automotive Parts: Tires, large car parts, batteries, and similar automotive materials may require separate recycling or disposal. Please check with us before including these items in your cleanup.

  • Other Special-Handling Items: Certain mattresses, oversized items, and materials with special disposal requirements may also have restrictions depending on the disposal facility.

We know it can be hard to remember what can and can’t go in a dumpster—and we’re happy to help. If you’re unsure about one specific item or a whole pile of debris, just give us a call or send us a message before tossing it in. We can help you figure out the best way to handle it.

Most of the things you clean out during a home project can go right into your dumpster, but some materials need a little extra care. Certain items can create fires, release harmful chemicals, contaminate soil or water, or put our drivers and disposal facility workers at risk.

Here are some of the most common items that should never be placed in your dumpster and why:

Batteries

Lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries can cause fires or explosions if they are damaged, crushed, or exposed to heat. Fires involving batteries can spread quickly and are especially difficult to extinguish, creating serious risks for workers, drivers, first responders, and disposal facilities. Batteries should always be taken to a proper recycling or collection location.

Paints & Solvents

Paint, paint thinner, and solvents can release harmful fumes, are often flammable, and can cause environmental contamination if they leak or are disposed of improperly. Many communities have household hazardous waste programs that accept these materials.

Pesticides & Herbicides

Products used to kill weeds, insects, or other pests contain chemicals that can be harmful to people, pets, wildlife, and aquatic life. They can also contaminate soil and water if they are not disposed of properly.

Household Cleaners

Strong cleaners such as bleach, ammonia, and certain solvents can be corrosive and may cause chemical burns or release harmful fumes. Keeping these products out of the dumpster helps protect everyone who handles your waste.

Motor Oil & Automotive Fluids

Motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, and other automotive fluids can contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Even a small spill can contaminate soil and water, so these materials require proper collection and disposal.

Electronics

Items such as televisions, computer monitors, computers, and other electronic equipment can contain materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Recycling or specialized e-waste programs can help recover valuable materials while keeping potentially harmful substances out of landfills.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Fluorescent bulbs contain mercury and should be handled carefully, especially if one breaks. Mercury can be harmful to people and the environment, so these bulbs should be taken to an appropriate recycling or hazardous-waste collection location.

Medications & Pharmaceuticals

Unused or expired medications should not be placed in a dumpster or flushed down the drain. Special medication take-back programs provide a safer way to dispose of these products and help prevent accidental poisoning, misuse, and contamination of water supplies.

Asbestos

Asbestos-containing materials require special handling because damaged materials can release tiny fibers into the air. Breathing asbestos fibers can cause serious long-term health problems. If you suspect a material contains asbestos, contact a qualified professional for proper testing, removal, and disposal.

Propane Tanks

Propane tanks can remain pressurized even when they appear to be empty. If they are crushed or exposed to certain conditions, they can create a serious fire or explosion hazard. Propane tanks should be taken to a facility or program that specifically accepts them.batterynetwork.org

Aerosol Cans

Aerosol cans can contain flammable propellants and may still be pressurized. Crushing or puncturing them can cause them to rupture or explode, so they should be handled through an appropriate disposal program.

Fertilizers

Fertilizers contain concentrated chemicals that can be harmful if released into the environment. Improper disposal can allow these chemicals to enter soil and groundwater, so leftover fertilizer should be handled according to local disposal guidelines.

Not Sure What to Do With Something?

We understand that figuring out how to dispose of certain items can be confusing. When in doubt, just ask us before putting it in the dumpster. We’re happy to help you determine whether an item is accepted or point you toward the appropriate disposal option.
